We write cot⁡x\cot x in terms of sine and cosine, then differentiate with the quotient rule.

cot⁡x=cos⁡xsin⁡x\cot x = \frac{\cos x}{\sin x}
ddx(cot⁡x)=(−sin⁡x)(sin⁡x)−(cos⁡x)(cos⁡x)sin⁡2x\frac{d}{dx}\left( \cot x \right) = \frac{\left( - \sin x \right)\left( \sin x \right) - \left( \cos x \right)\left( \cos x \right)}{\sin^{2}x}
=−sin⁡2x−cos⁡2xsin⁡2x= \frac{- \sin^{2}x - \cos^{2}x}{\sin^{2}x}
=−(sin⁡2x+cos⁡2x)sin⁡2x= \frac{- \left( \sin^{2}x + \cos^{2}x \right)}{\sin^{2}x}

Since sin⁡2x+cos⁡2x=1\sin^{2}x + \cos^{2}x = 1,

ddx(cot⁡x)=−1sin⁡2x=−cosec2x  (shown)\frac{d}{dx}\left( \cot x \right) = \frac{- 1}{\sin^{2}x} = - {cosec}^{2}x\ \ \left( \text{shown} \right)
To check your answer: at x=π4x = \frac{\pi}{4}, cot⁡x=1\cot x = 1, and numerically differentiating cot⁡x\cot x there gives a gradient close to −2- 2, matching −cosec2(π4)=−(2)2=−2- {cosec}^{2}\left( \frac{\pi}{4} \right) = - \left( \sqrt{2} \right)^{2} = - 2 ✓

Using sin⁡2x=2sin⁡xcos⁡x\sin 2x = 2\sin x\cos x and tan⁡x=sin⁡xcos⁡x\tan x = \frac{\sin x}{\cos x},

sin⁡2xtan⁡x=(2sin⁡xcos⁡x)(sin⁡xcos⁡x)\sin 2x\tan x = \left( 2\sin x\cos x \right)\left( \frac{\sin x}{\cos x} \right)
=2sin⁡2x  (shown)= 2\sin^{2}x\ \ \left( \text{shown} \right)
To check your answer: at x=π6x = \frac{\pi}{6}, LHS =sin⁡π3tan⁡π6=32⋅13=12\text{=}\sin\frac{\pi}{3}\tan\frac{\pi}{6} = \frac{\sqrt{3}}{2} \cdot \frac{1}{\sqrt{3}} = \frac{1}{2}; RHS =2sin⁡2π6=2(12)2=12\text{=}2\sin^{2}\frac{\pi}{6} = 2\left( \frac{1}{2} \right)^{2} = \frac{1}{2} ✓

Approach

the integrand is cosec 6xcot⁡3xcosec\, 6x\cot 3x, which is not a standard form. Part (b) supplies an identity relating sin⁡2x\sin 2x, tan⁡x\tan x and sin⁡2x\sin^{2}x; replacing xx by 3x3x turns it into an identity for sin⁡6x\sin 6x, tan⁡3x\tan 3x and sin⁡23x\sin^{2}3x, from which cosec 6xcot⁡3xcosec\, 6x\cot 3x can be rewritten as a multiple of cosec23x{cosec}^{2}3x, a form we can integrate directly.

Replacing xx by 3x3x in (b), sin⁡6xtan⁡3x=2sin⁡23x\sin 6x\tan 3x = 2\sin^{2}3x. Rearranging for cot⁡3x\cot 3x,

tan⁡3x=2sin⁡23xsin⁡6x\tan 3x = \frac{2\sin^{2}3x}{\sin 6x}
⇒cot⁡3x=sin⁡6x2sin⁡23x\Rightarrow \cot 3x = \frac{\sin 6x}{2\sin^{2}3x}

Multiplying both sides by cosec 6x=1sin⁡6xcosec\, 6x = \frac{1}{\sin 6x},

cosec 6xcot⁡3x=1sin⁡6x⋅sin⁡6x2sin⁡23xcosec\, 6x\cot 3x = \frac{1}{\sin 6x} \cdot \frac{\sin 6x}{2\sin^{2}3x}
=12cosec23x= \frac{1}{2}{cosec}^{2}3x
To check your answer: at x=π12x = \frac{\pi}{12}, cosec(π2)cot⁡(π4)=(1)(1)=1cosec\left( \frac{\pi}{2} \right)\cot\left( \frac{\pi}{4} \right) = (1)(1) = 1; 12cosec2(π4)=12(2)2=1\frac{1}{2}\text{cosec}^{2}\left( \frac{\pi}{4} \right) = \frac{1}{2}\left( \sqrt{2} \right)^{2} = 1 ✓

By (a) generalized with the chain rule, ddx[cot⁡(3x)]=−3 cosec2(3x)\frac{d}{dx}\left\lbrack \cot(3x) \right\rbrack = - 3\,{cosec}^{2}(3x), so

∫cosec 6xcot⁡3x dx=∫12cosec23x dx\int cosec\, 6x\cot 3x\ dx = \int\frac{1}{2}{cosec}^{2}3x\ dx
=12(−13cot⁡3x)+c= \frac{1}{2}\left( - \frac{1}{3}\cot 3x \right) + c
=−16cot⁡3x+c= - \frac{1}{6}\cot 3x + c

Evaluating from x=π18x = \frac{\pi}{18} to x=π9x = \frac{\pi}{9}: at x=π9x = \frac{\pi}{9}, 3x=π33x = \frac{\pi}{3}, so cot⁡(π3)=13\cot\left( \frac{\pi}{3} \right) = \frac{1}{\sqrt{3}}; at x=π18x = \frac{\pi}{18}, 3x=π63x = \frac{\pi}{6}, so cot⁡(π6)=3\cot\left( \frac{\pi}{6} \right) = \sqrt{3}.

∫π/18π/9cosec 6xcot⁡3x dx=[−16cot⁡3x]π/18π/9\int_{\pi/18}^{\pi/9}{cosec}\, 6x\cot 3x\ dx = \left\lbrack - \frac{1}{6}\cot 3x \right\rbrack_{\pi/18}^{\pi/9}
=−16(13−3)= - \frac{1}{6}\left( \frac{1}{\sqrt{3}} - \sqrt{3} \right)
=−16(1−33)= - \frac{1}{6}\left( \frac{1 - 3}{\sqrt{3}} \right)
=263= \frac{2}{6\sqrt{3}}
=133= \frac{1}{3\sqrt{3}}

Rationalizing,

133=39\frac{1}{3\sqrt{3}} = \frac{\sqrt{3}}{9}
To check your answer: 39≈0.1925\frac{\sqrt{3}}{9} \approx 0.1925, matching a numerical estimate of ∫π/18π/9cosec 6xcot⁡3x dx≈0.1925\int_{\pi/18}^{\pi/9}{cosec}\, 6x\cot 3x\ dx \approx 0.1925 ✓

∴\therefore ∫π/18π/9cosec 6xcot⁡3x dx=39\int_{\pi/18}^{\pi/9}{cosec}\, 6x\cot 3x\ dx = \frac{\sqrt{3}}{9}.
