x=12(e3t+2e−3t),y=12(e3t−2e−3t)x = \frac{1}{2}\left( e^{3t} + 2e^{- 3t} \right),\quad y = \frac{1}{2}\left( e^{3t} - 2e^{- 3t} \right)

Differentiating with respect to tt,

dxdt=12(3e3t−6e−3t)=32e3t−3e−3t\frac{dx}{dt} = \frac{1}{2}\left( 3e^{3t} - 6e^{- 3t} \right) = \frac{3}{2}e^{3t} - 3e^{- 3t}
dydt=12(3e3t+6e−3t)=32e3t+3e−3t\frac{dy}{dt} = \frac{1}{2}\left( 3e^{3t} + 6e^{- 3t} \right) = \frac{3}{2}e^{3t} + 3e^{- 3t}

At t=13ln⁡2t = \frac{1}{3}\ln 2, e3t=eln⁡2=2e^{3t} = e^{\ln 2} = 2 and e−3t=12e^{- 3t} = \frac{1}{2}, so

dxdt=32(2)−3(12)=32\frac{dx}{dt} = \frac{3}{2}(2) - 3\left( \frac{1}{2} \right) = \frac{3}{2}
dydt=32(2)+3(12)=92\frac{dy}{dt} = \frac{3}{2}(2) + 3\left( \frac{1}{2} \right) = \frac{9}{2}

The gradient of the tangent is

dydx=dy/dtdx/dt\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{dy/dt}{dx/dt}
=9/23/2= \frac{9/2}{3/2}
=3= 3
To check your answer: at t=13ln⁡2t = \frac{1}{3}\ln 2, x=12(2+1)=32x = \frac{1}{2}(2 + 1) = \frac{3}{2} and y=12(2−1)=12y = \frac{1}{2}(2 - 1) = \frac{1}{2}, both finite, and dxdt≠0\frac{dx}{dt} \neq 0 there, so the curve is smooth with a well-defined tangent at this point ✓

Since the tangent has gradient 33, the normal (perpendicular to the tangent) has gradient −13- \frac{1}{3}.

∴\therefore the gradient of the normal is −13- \frac{1}{3}.

Approach

the parameter appears as e3te^{3t} and e−3te^{- 3t} in both xx and yy. Squaring xx and yy and subtracting eliminates the cross terms and the parameter together, since x2x^{2} and y2y^{2} each contain e6te^{6t} and e−6te^{- 6t} with the same coefficients but opposite signs on the middle term.

x2=14(e3t+2e−3t)2x^{2} = \frac{1}{4}\left( e^{3t} + 2e^{- 3t} \right)^{2}
=14(e6t+4+4e−6t)= \frac{1}{4}\left( e^{6t} + 4 + 4e^{- 6t} \right)
y2=14(e3t−2e−3t)2y^{2} = \frac{1}{4}\left( e^{3t} - 2e^{- 3t} \right)^{2}
=14(e6t−4+4e−6t)= \frac{1}{4}\left( e^{6t} - 4 + 4e^{- 6t} \right)

Subtracting,

x2−y2=14[(e6t+4+4e−6t)−(e6t−4+4e−6t)]x^{2} - y^{2} = \frac{1}{4}\left\lbrack \left( e^{6t} + 4 + 4e^{- 6t} \right) - \left( e^{6t} - 4 + 4e^{- 6t} \right) \right\rbrack
=14(8)= \frac{1}{4}(8)
=2= 2
To check your answer: at t=13ln⁡2t = \frac{1}{3}\ln 2, x=32, y=12x = \frac{3}{2},\ y = \frac{1}{2}, so x2−y2=94−14=2x^{2} - y^{2} = \frac{9}{4} - \frac{1}{4} = 2, matching ✓

For the restriction on xx: since e3t>0e^{3t} > 0 and 2e−3t>02e^{- 3t} > 0 for all real tt, by AM–GM,

e3t+2e−3t≥2e3t⋅2e−3t=22e^{3t} + 2e^{- 3t} \geq 2\sqrt{e^{3t} \cdot 2e^{- 3t}} = 2\sqrt{2}

with equality when e3t=2e−3te^{3t} = 2e^{- 3t}, i.e. e6t=2e^{6t} = 2. Hence

x=12(e3t+2e−3t)≥12(22)=2x = \frac{1}{2}\left( e^{3t} + 2e^{- 3t} \right) \geq \frac{1}{2}\left( 2\sqrt{2} \right) = \sqrt{2}
To check your answer: setting dxdt=0\frac{dx}{dt} = 0 gives 32e3t−3e−3t=0⇒e6t=2\frac{3}{2}e^{3t} - 3e^{- 3t} = 0 \Rightarrow e^{6t} = 2, the same condition found from AM–GM, confirming x=2x = \sqrt{2} is the minimum (turning) value of xx ✓

∴\therefore the cartesian equation is x2−y2=2x^{2} - y^{2} = 2, with x≥2x \geq \sqrt{2}.

This is how we mark, and how we teach.
