Approach: Set up the total wire length as a constraint linking xx and yy, use it to write yy in terms of xx (and dd), then express the total area as a function of xx alone and maximise it.

Let the total area of the rectangle and the semicircle be A m2A\ \text{m}^{2}.

The rectangle has perimeter 2x+2y2x + 2y. The semicircle, including its diameter, has perimeter (the curved arc plus the straight diameter) πx+2x\pi x + 2x. Since the wire is cut into exactly these two pieces,

2x+2y+πx+2x=d2x + 2y + \pi x + 2x = d
⇒2y=d−4x−πx\Rightarrow 2y = d - 4x - \pi x
⇒y=d2−2x−πx2.\Rightarrow y = \frac{d}{2} - 2x - \frac{\pi x}{2}.

Since y>0y > 0, this requires 0<x<d4+π0 < x < \frac{d}{4 + \pi}.

The total area is the rectangle’s area plus the semicircle’s area:

A=xy+12πx2.A = xy + \frac{1}{2}\pi x^{2}.

Substituting the expression for yy,

A=x(d2−2x−πx2)+12πx2A = x\left( \frac{d}{2} - 2x - \frac{\pi x}{2} \right) + \frac{1}{2}\pi x^{2}
=d2x−2x2−π2x2+π2x2= \frac{d}{2}x - 2x^{2} - \frac{\pi}{2}x^{2} + \frac{\pi}{2}x^{2}
=d2x−2x2.= \frac{d}{2}x - 2x^{2}.

Note: the π\pi terms cancel exactly, so AA depends on xx but not directly on π\pi at this stage.

Differentiating,

dAdx=d2−4x.\frac{dA}{dx} = \frac{d}{2} - 4x.

At a stationary point, dAdx=0\frac{dA}{dx} = 0:

d2−4x=0\frac{d}{2} - 4x = 0
⇒x=d8.\Rightarrow x = \frac{d}{8}.

Since d8<d4+π\frac{d}{8} < \frac{d}{4 + \pi} (as 8>4+π8 > 4 + \pi), this value of xx lies in the valid range.

d2Adx2=−4<0,\frac{d^{2}A}{dx^{2}} = - 4 < 0,

so AA is maximum at x=d8x = \frac{d}{8}.

Substituting back,

Amax⁡=d2(d8)−2(d8)2A_{\max} = \frac{d}{2}\left( \frac{d}{8} \right) - 2\left( \frac{d}{8} \right)^{2}
=d216−d232= \frac{d^{2}}{16} - \frac{d^{2}}{32}
=d232.= \frac{d^{2}}{32}.
To check your answer: at x=d8x = \frac{d}{8}, y=d2−2(d8)−π2(d8)=d(4−π)16>0y = \frac{d}{2} - 2\left( \frac{d}{8} \right) - \frac{\pi}{2}\left( \frac{d}{8} \right) = \frac{d(4 - \pi)}{16} > 0 since π<4\pi < 4, confirming this is a genuine (feasible) maximum. ✓

∴\therefore the maximum total area is d232 m2\frac{d^{2}}{32}\ \text{m}^{2}, so k=132k = \frac{1}{32}.  (shown)
