Approach

y=1xy = \frac{1}{x} is transformed by translations and a stretch. To see these directly, we first rewrite f(x)=ax+kx−af(x) = \frac{ax + k}{x - a} in the form cx−a+a\frac{c}{x - a} + a by polynomial division, which matches the shape of a transformed 1x\frac{1}{x}.

Writing ax+k=a(x−a)+(k+a2)ax + k = a(x - a) + \left( k + a^{2} \right), since a(x−a)=ax−a2a(x - a) = ax - a^{2} leaves remainder k+a2k + a^{2},

f(x)=a(x−a)+(k+a2)x−af(x) = \frac{a(x - a) + \left( k + a^{2} \right)}{x - a}
=a+k+a2x−a= a + \frac{k + a^{2}}{x - a}
To check your answer: expanding a+k+a2x−a=a(x−a)+k+a2x−a=ax−a2+k+a2x−a=ax+kx−aa + \frac{k + a^{2}}{x - a} = \frac{a(x - a) + k + a^{2}}{x - a} = \frac{ax - a^{2} + k + a^{2}}{x - a} = \frac{ax + k}{x - a}, matching the original f(x)f(x) ✓

Starting from y=1xy = \frac{1}{x}, the curve y=f(x)=k+a2x−a+ay = f(x) = \frac{k + a^{2}}{x - a} + a is obtained by:

Step 1: a translation of aa units in the positive xx-direction (replacing xx with x−ax - a), giving y=1x−ay = \frac{1}{x - a}.

Step 2: a stretch parallel to the yy-axis, scale factor (a2+k)\left( a^{2} + k \right), giving y=a2+kx−ay = \frac{a^{2} + k}{x - a}.

Step 3: a translation of aa units in the positive yy-direction, giving y=a2+kx−a+a=f(x)y = \frac{a^{2} + k}{x - a} + a = f(x).

∴\therefore y=1xy = \frac{1}{x} is translated aa units in the positive xx-direction, stretched parallel to the yy-axis with scale factor a2+ka^{2} + k, then translated aa units in the positive yy-direction.

Part (b)

Let y=ax+kx−ay = \frac{ax + k}{x - a}. Solving for xx in terms of yy,

y(x−a)=ax+ky(x - a) = ax + k
⇒xy−ay=ax+k\Rightarrow xy - ay = ax + k
⇒xy−ax=k+ay\Rightarrow xy - ax = k + ay
⇒x(y−a)=k+ay\Rightarrow x(y - a) = k + ay
⇒x=ay+ky−a\Rightarrow x = \frac{ay + k}{y - a}

Swapping xx and yy,

f−1(x)=ax+kx−af^{- 1}(x) = \frac{ax + k}{x - a}
To check your answer: f−1(x)f^{- 1}(x) has exactly the same formula as f(x)f(x). Testing with a=2a = 2, k=3k = 3, x=5x = 5: f(5)=133f(5) = \frac{13}{3}, and f(133)=5f\left( \frac{13}{3} \right) = 5, so ff maps 5→133→55 \rightarrow \frac{13}{3} \rightarrow 5, confirming ff is self-inverse ✓

∴\therefore f−1(x)=ax+kx−a=f(x)f^{- 1}(x) = \frac{ax + k}{x - a} = f(x).

Part (c)

f2(x)=xf^{2}(x) = x

Explanation: by (b), f−1(x)=f(x)f^{- 1}(x) = f(x), so ff is an involution (self-inverse). Applying ff twice returns the original input, f2(x)=f(f(x))=f(f−1(x))=xf^{2}(x) = f\left( f(x) \right) = f\left( f^{- 1}(x) \right) = x.

Approach

since f2(x)=xf^{2}(x) = x for every xx, applying ff an even number of times is the identity, and applying it an odd number of times is the same as applying it once. As 20232023 is odd, f2023f^{2023} reduces to a single application of ff.

Since 20222022 is even, f2022(y)=yf^{2022}(y) = y for any yy, so

f2023(x)=f2022(f(x))f^{2023}(x) = f^{2022}\left( f(x) \right)
=f(x)= f(x)

Hence f2023(1)=f(1)f^{2023}(1) = f(1).

f(1)=a(1)+k1−af(1) = \frac{a(1) + k}{1 - a}
=a+k1−a= \frac{a + k}{1 - a}
To check your answer: testing with a=2a = 2, k=3k = 3: direct iteration of ff starting from 11, applied 20232023 times, gives −5- 5, matching a+k1−a=2+31−2=5−1=−5\frac{a + k}{1 - a} = \frac{2 + 3}{1 - 2} = \frac{5}{- 1} = - 5 ✓

∴\therefore f2023(1)=a+k1−af^{2023}(1) = \frac{a + k}{1 - a}.
