We use the quotient rule with u=ln⁡xu = \ln x and v=xv = x, so u′=1xu'= \frac{1}{x} and v′=1v'= 1.

dydx=vu′−uv′v2\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{vu'- uv'}{v^{2}}
=x⋅1x−ln⁡x⋅1x2= \frac{x \cdot \frac{1}{x} - \ln x \cdot 1}{x^{2}}
=1−ln⁡xx2= \frac{1 - \ln x}{x^{2}}

∴dydx=1−ln⁡xx2\therefore\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{1 - \ln x}{x^{2}}.

Approach

The integrand ln⁡xx2\frac{\ln x}{x^{2}} is not itself dydx\frac{dy}{dx}, but comparing the two shows how they relate: split dydx\frac{dy}{dx} from (i) into two fractions and isolate the term we want.

Since

dydx=1x2−ln⁡xx2,\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{1}{x^{2}} - \frac{\ln x}{x^{2}},

rearranging gives

ln⁡xx2=1x2−dydx.\frac{\ln x}{x^{2}} = \frac{1}{x^{2}} - \frac{dy}{dx}.

Integrating both sides from 11 to ee:

∫1eln⁡xx2 dx\int_{1}^{e}\frac{\ln x}{x^{2}}\, dx
=∫1e1x2 dx−∫1edydx dx= \int_{1}^{e}\frac{1}{x^{2}}\, dx - \int_{1}^{e}\frac{dy}{dx}\, dx
=[−1x]1e−[y]1e= \left\lbrack - \frac{1}{x} \right\rbrack_{1}^{e} - \lbrack y\rbrack_{1}^{e}

Since y=ln⁡xxy = \frac{\ln x}{x}, we have y(e)=1ey(e) = \frac{1}{e} and y(1)=0y(1) = 0.

∫1eln⁡xx2 dx\int_{1}^{e}\frac{\ln x}{x^{2}}\, dx
=(−1e+1)−(1e−0)= \left( - \frac{1}{e} + 1 \right) - \left( \frac{1}{e} - 0 \right)
=1−2e= 1 - \frac{2}{e}
To check your answer: By GC, ∫1eln⁡xx2 dx≈0.264\int_{1}^{e}\frac{\ln x}{x^{2}}\, dx \approx 0.264, and 1−2e≈0.2641 - \frac{2}{e} \approx 0.264. ✓

∴∫1eln⁡xx2 dx=1−2e\therefore\int_{1}^{e}\frac{\ln x}{x^{2}}\, dx = 1 - \frac{2}{e}.
