By the quotient rule, with u=4x+9u = 4x + 9, v=x+2v = x + 2:

dydx\frac{dy}{dx}
=4(x+2)−(4x+9)(1)(x+2)2= \frac{4(x + 2) - (4x + 9)(1)}{(x + 2)^{2}}
=4x+8−4x−9(x+2)2= \frac{4x + 8 - 4x - 9}{(x + 2)^{2}}
=−1(x+2)2= \frac{- 1}{(x + 2)^{2}}

Since x≠−2x \neq - 2 (excluded from the domain of CC), (x+2)2>0(x + 2)^{2} > 0 for every point on CC, so

dydx=−1(x+2)2<0  for all points on C.\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{- 1}{(x + 2)^{2}} < 0\ \ \text{for all points on }C.

∴\therefore the gradient of CC is negative for all points on CC.  (shown)

Writing 4x+9=a(x+2)+b4x + 9 = a(x + 2) + b:

4x+9=ax+2a+b4x + 9 = ax + 2a + b

Comparing coefficients of xx: a=4a = 4. Comparing constants: 2a+b=9⇒b=9−8=12a + b = 9 \Rightarrow b = 9 - 8 = 1.

∴y=4+1x+2\therefore y = 4 + \frac{1}{x + 2}
To check your answer: at x=0x = 0, y=4+12=92y = 4 + \frac{1}{2} = \frac{9}{2}, which matches 4(0)+90+2=92\frac{4(0) + 9}{0 + 2} = \frac{9}{2}. ✓

As x→∞x \rightarrow \infty, 1x+2→0\frac{1}{x + 2} \rightarrow 0, so y→4y \rightarrow 4; as x→−2x \rightarrow - 2, 1x+2→±∞\frac{1}{x + 2} \rightarrow \pm \infty.

∴\therefore the asymptotes of CC are y=4y = 4 and x=−2x = - 2.

Approach

From (ii), y=4+1x+2y = 4 + \frac{1}{x + 2}. Starting from y=1xy = \frac{1}{x}, replacing xx by x+2x + 2 shifts the graph horizontally, and adding 44 shifts it vertically; these two translations are independent of each other and can be applied in either order.

∴\therefore a translation of 22 units in the negative xx-direction, followed by a translation of 44 units in the positive yy-direction, transforms the graph of y=1xy = \frac{1}{x} onto the graph of CC.

This is how we mark, and how we teach.
