Since CC lies on OAOA with OC:CA=3:2OC:CA = 3:2, CC divides OAOA so that OC=35OAOC = \frac{3}{5}OA:

OC→=35a.\overrightarrow{OC} = \frac{3}{5}\mathbf{a}.

Since DD lies on OBOB with OD:DB=5:6OD:DB = 5:6, DD divides OBOB so that OD=511OBOD = \frac{5}{11}OB:

OD→=511b.\overrightarrow{OD} = \frac{5}{11}\mathbf{b}.

Approach

A line through two points with known position vectors is written r=p+λ(q−p)\mathbf{r} = \mathbf{p} + \lambda\left( \mathbf{q} - \mathbf{p} \right), taking one point as the base and the displacement to the other as the direction. We take BB as the base for line BCBC, so that λ=0\lambda = 0 gives BB and λ=1\lambda = 1 gives CC, matching the form given in the question.

The line BCBC passes through BB (position vector b\mathbf{b}) in the direction of C−BC - B:

r=b+λ(35a−b)\mathbf{r} = \mathbf{b} + \lambda\left( \frac{3}{5}\mathbf{a} - \mathbf{b} \right)
=35λa+(1−λ)b,= \frac{3}{5}\lambda\mathbf{a} + (1 - \lambda)\mathbf{b},

as required   \ \ (shown).

By the same method, the line ADAD passes through AA (position vector a\mathbf{a}) in the direction of D−AD - A:

r=a+μ(511b−a)\mathbf{r} = \mathbf{a} + \mu\left( \frac{5}{11}\mathbf{b} - \mathbf{a} \right)
=(1−μ)a+511μb.= (1 - \mu)\mathbf{a} + \frac{5}{11}\mu\mathbf{b}.

Approach

At the point EE where the lines meet, the two expressions for r\mathbf{r} are equal for some values of λ\lambda and μ\mu. Since a\mathbf{a} and b\mathbf{b} are non-parallel (non-zero, non-collinear position vectors from OO), we can compare coefficients of a\mathbf{a} and of b\mathbf{b} separately.

At the intersection:

35λa+(1−λ)b=(1−μ)a+511μb.\frac{3}{5}\lambda\mathbf{a} + (1 - \lambda)\mathbf{b} = (1 - \mu)\mathbf{a} + \frac{5}{11}\mu\mathbf{b}.

Comparing coefficients of a\mathbf{a}:

35λ=1−μ.(1)\frac{3}{5}\lambda = 1 - \mu.\quad(1)

Comparing coefficients of b\mathbf{b}:

1−λ=511μ.(2)1 - \lambda = \frac{5}{11}\mu.\quad(2)

From (2):

μ=115(1−λ).\mu = \frac{11}{5}(1 - \lambda).

Substituting into (1):

35λ=1−115(1−λ)\frac{3}{5}\lambda = 1 - \frac{11}{5}(1 - \lambda)
=−65+115λ.= - \frac{6}{5} + \frac{11}{5}\lambda.

Solving:

35λ−115λ=−65\frac{3}{5}\lambda - \frac{11}{5}\lambda = - \frac{6}{5}
−85λ=−65- \frac{8}{5}\lambda = - \frac{6}{5}
λ=34.\lambda = \frac{3}{4}.

Then:

μ=115(1−34)=1120.\mu = \frac{11}{5}\left( 1 - \frac{3}{4} \right) = \frac{11}{20}.

Substituting λ=34\lambda = \frac{3}{4} into the equation of line BCBC:

OE→=35(34)a+(1−34)b\overrightarrow{OE} = \frac{3}{5}\left( \frac{3}{4} \right)\mathbf{a} + \left( 1 - \frac{3}{4} \right)\mathbf{b}
=920a+14b.= \frac{9}{20}\mathbf{a} + \frac{1}{4}\mathbf{b}.
To check your answer: substituting μ=1120\mu = \frac{11}{20} into the equation of line ADAD gives (1−1120)a+511(1120)b=920a+14b\left( 1 - \frac{11}{20} \right)\mathbf{a} + \frac{5}{11}\left( \frac{11}{20} \right)\mathbf{b} = \frac{9}{20}\mathbf{a} + \frac{1}{4}\mathbf{b}, the same position vector. ✓

For the ratio AE:EDAE:ED, let d=OD→=511b\mathbf{d} = \overrightarrow{OD} = \frac{5}{11}\mathbf{b}, so that line ADAD is r=a+μ(d−a)\mathbf{r} = \mathbf{a} + \mu\left( \mathbf{d} - \mathbf{a} \right), where μ=0\mu = 0 gives AA and μ=1\mu = 1 gives DD. Since EE corresponds to μ=1120\mu = \frac{11}{20},

AE→=1120(d−a),ED→=(1−1120)(d−a)=920(d−a),\overrightarrow{AE} = \frac{11}{20}\left( \mathbf{d} - \mathbf{a} \right),\quad\quad\overrightarrow{ED} = \left( 1 - \frac{11}{20} \right)\left( \mathbf{d} - \mathbf{a} \right) = \frac{9}{20}\left( \mathbf{d} - \mathbf{a} \right),

so AE→\overrightarrow{AE} and ED→\overrightarrow{ED} are parallel and in the ratio of these scalars:

AE:ED=1120:920=11:9.AE:ED = \frac{11}{20}:\frac{9}{20} = 11:9.

∴\therefore OE→=920a+14b\overrightarrow{OE} = \frac{9}{20}\mathbf{a} + \frac{1}{4}\mathbf{b} and AE:ED=11:9AE:ED = 11:9.
