Approach

From the diagram, A1A_{1} is bounded below by the xx-axis, on the left by y=sin⁡xy = \sin x (from OO to PP) and on the right by y=cos⁡xy = \cos x (from PP to (12π, 0)\left( \frac{1}{2}\pi,\ 0 \right)); A2A_{2} is bounded on the left by the yy-axis, above by y=cos⁡xy = \cos x (from (0, 1)(0,\ 1) to PP) and below by y=sin⁡xy = \sin x (from OO to PP). Both areas split naturally at x=14πx = \frac{1}{4}\pi, the xx-coordinate of PP.

Approach

The region described has x=0x = 0 as its left boundary throughout, so rotating about the yy-axis gives a solid of revolution by the disc method, with radius equal to xx expressed as a function of yy.

For 0≤x≤14π0 \leq x \leq \frac{1}{4}\pi, y=sin⁡xy = \sin x is increasing, so it has an inverse there; writing xx in terms of yy,

x=sin⁡−1y.x = \sin^{- 1}y.

The region bounded by y=sin⁡xy = \sin x between OO and PP, the line y=122y = \frac{1}{2}\sqrt{2}, and the yy-axis is the set of points with 0≤y≤1220 \leq y \leq \frac{1}{2}\sqrt{2} and 0≤x≤sin⁡−1y0 \leq x \leq \sin^{- 1}y. Rotating this about the yy-axis through 360∘360^{\circ}, each cross-section at height yy is a disc of radius x=sin⁡−1yx = \sin^{- 1}y, so the volume is

V=π∫0122x2 dyV = \pi\int_{0}^{\frac{1}{2}\sqrt{2}}x^{2}\, dy
=π∫0122(sin⁡−1y)2dy.  (shown)= \pi\int_{0}^{\frac{1}{2}\sqrt{2}}\left( \sin^{- 1}y \right)^{2}dy.\ \ \left( \text{shown} \right)

Part (iii)

Approach

The substitution y=sin⁡uy = \sin u removes the inverse sine, since sin⁡−1y=u\sin^{- 1}y = u once uu is restricted to the range where y=sin⁡uy = \sin u has an inverse; the limits transform along with the variable.

Let y=sin⁡uy = \sin u, so dy=cos⁡u dudy = \cos u\, du. For u∈[0, 14π]⊂[−12π, 12π]u \in \left\lbrack 0,\ \frac{1}{4}\pi \right\rbrack \subset \left\lbrack - \frac{1}{2}\pi,\ \frac{1}{2}\pi \right\rbrack, the range of the principal branch of sin⁡−1\sin^{- 1}, we have sin⁡−1y=sin⁡−1(sin⁡u)=u\sin^{- 1}y = \sin^{- 1}\left( \sin u \right) = u.

When y=0y = 0, u=0u = 0; when y=122y = \frac{1}{2}\sqrt{2}, sin⁡u=122\sin u = \frac{1}{2}\sqrt{2}, so u=14πu = \frac{1}{4}\pi.

π∫0122(sin⁡−1y)2dy=π∫014πu2cos⁡u du.\pi\int_{0}^{\frac{1}{2}\sqrt{2}}\left( \sin^{- 1}y \right)^{2}dy = \pi\int_{0}^{\frac{1}{4}\pi}u^{2}\cos u\, du.

∴a=0\therefore a = 0, b=14πb = \frac{1}{4}\pi.

Approach

∫u2cos⁡u du\int u^{2}\cos u\, du needs integration by parts twice, differentiating u2u^{2} down to a constant while integrating cos⁡u\cos u each time.

∫u2cos⁡u du=u2sin⁡u−∫2usin⁡u du\int u^{2}\cos u\, du = u^{2}\sin u - \int 2u\sin u\, du
=u2sin⁡u−2(−ucos⁡u+∫cos⁡u du)= u^{2}\sin u - 2\left( - u\cos u + \int\cos u\, du \right)
=u2sin⁡u+2ucos⁡u−2sin⁡u (+C).= u^{2}\sin u + 2u\cos u - 2\sin u\ ( + C).
π∫014πu2cos⁡u du=π[u2sin⁡u+2ucos⁡u−2sin⁡u]014π\pi\int_{0}^{\frac{1}{4}\pi}u^{2}\cos u\, du = \pi\left\lbrack u^{2}\sin u + 2u\cos u - 2\sin u \right\rbrack_{0}^{\frac{1}{4}\pi}
=π(π216⋅122+2⋅14π⋅122−2⋅122)= \pi\left( \frac{\pi^{2}}{16} \cdot \frac{1}{2}\sqrt{2} + 2 \cdot \frac{1}{4}\pi \cdot \frac{1}{2}\sqrt{2} - 2 \cdot \frac{1}{2}\sqrt{2} \right)
=π(2π232+2π4−2)= \pi\left( \frac{\sqrt{2}\pi^{2}}{32} + \frac{\sqrt{2}\pi}{4} - \sqrt{2} \right)
=2π332+2π24−2π.= \frac{\sqrt{2}\pi^{3}}{32} + \frac{\sqrt{2}\pi^{2}}{4} - \sqrt{2}\pi.

∴\therefore the exact volume is 2π332+2π24−2π\frac{\sqrt{2}\pi^{3}}{32} + \frac{\sqrt{2}\pi^{2}}{4} - \sqrt{2}\pi, i.e. 2π(π232+π4−1)\sqrt{2}\pi\left( \frac{\pi^{2}}{32} + \frac{\pi}{4} - 1 \right).
