Approach

Since aa and bb are real, the non-real roots of the cubic must occur in conjugate pairs, which immediately gives a second root. The third (real) root then follows from Vieta’s formula for the sum of the roots, after which aa and bb follow from the remaining Vieta relations.

As aa and bb are real, the complex roots of x3+2x2+ax+b=0x^{3} + 2x^{2} + ax + b = 0 occur in conjugate pairs. Since 1+12i1 + \frac{1}{2}i is a root, its conjugate 1−12i1 - \frac{1}{2}i is also a root.

Let the third root be rr, which must be real. By Vieta’s formula, the sum of the roots equals −2- 2 (the negative of the coefficient of x2x^{2}):

(1+12i)+(1−12i)+r=−2\left( 1 + \frac{1}{2}i \right) + \left( 1 - \frac{1}{2}i \right) + r = - 2
⇒2+r=−2\Rightarrow 2 + r = - 2
⇒r=−4\Rightarrow r = - 4
To check your answer: the three roots 1+12i1 + \frac{1}{2}i, 1−12i1 - \frac{1}{2}i, −4- 4 sum to 2+(−4)=−22 + ( - 4) = - 2, as required ✓

By Vieta’s formula, the product of the roots equals −b- b:

(1+12i)(1−12i)(−4)=−b\left( 1 + \frac{1}{2}i \right)\left( 1 - \frac{1}{2}i \right)( - 4) = - b

Since (1+12i)(1−12i)=12−(12i)2=1+14=54\left( 1 + \frac{1}{2}i \right)\left( 1 - \frac{1}{2}i \right) = 1^{2} - \left( \frac{1}{2}i \right)^{2} = 1 + \frac{1}{4} = \frac{5}{4},

54×(−4)=−b\frac{5}{4} \times ( - 4) = - b
⇒−5=−b\Rightarrow - 5 = - b
⇒b=5\Rightarrow b = 5

Also by Vieta’s formula, the sum of the products of the roots taken two at a time equals aa:

a=(1+12i)(1−12i)+(1−12i)(−4)+(−4)(1+12i)a = \left( 1 + \frac{1}{2}i \right)\left( 1 - \frac{1}{2}i \right) + \left( 1 - \frac{1}{2}i \right)( - 4) + ( - 4)\left( 1 + \frac{1}{2}i \right)
=54+(−4+2i)+(−4−2i)= \frac{5}{4} + ( - 4 + 2i) + ( - 4 - 2i)
=54−8= \frac{5}{4} - 8
=−274= - \frac{27}{4}
To check your answer: expanding (x−1−12i)(x−1+12i)(x+4)\left( x - 1 - \frac{1}{2}i \right)\left( x - 1 + \frac{1}{2}i \right)(x + 4) directly gives x3+2x2−274x+5x^{3} + 2x^{2} - \frac{27}{4}x + 5, matching a=−274a = - \frac{27}{4} and b=5b = 5 ✓

∴\therefore the other roots are x=1−12ix = 1 - \frac{1}{2}i and x=−4x = - 4, with a=−274a = - \frac{27}{4} and b=5b = 5.
